Charlotte County, named for the bay of Charlotte Harbor, was established in 1921 after Desoto County was split into five counties. The present-day Charlotte County encompasses 859 square miles, with a variety of natural

Charlotte County has experienced a decrease in the crime rate in recent years. Fire protection is also adequate as substations are situated in all portions of the county and are provided by independent special districts outside of the incorporated cities.
